Salty Air & Spoiled Pups - A Dog Friendly “Beach Day’ but No Beach Needed

By Rachel S.

Not every military family gets stationed near the coast. Sometimes summer looks less like oceanfront views and more like apartment balconies, base housing patios, or tiny backyard setups squeezed between moving boxes and lawn chairs that have survived three PCS moves.

Your dog does not care.

Give them sunshine, snacks, a little water, and something exciting to sniff, and suddenly they’re living their best vacation life.

This June, we decided to bring the beach to our dog instead. Somehow, our balcony turned into a full-blown doggie resort.

The “Beach Setup”

It started with a tiny dog pool. Nothing fancy. Just enough water for splashing paws, dramatic zoomies, and approximately seven gallons ending up everywhere except inside the pool itself.

Then came the beach snacks.

I found some cute dog cookies shaped like crabs, seashells, and little suns. I was on a work trip, and naturally, Zero acted like he had just been served a five-star seafood buffet on a tropical island. The vibe was complete.

Pool? Check.
Summer treats? Check.
Happy spoiled dog? Absolutely.

Then here came the unexpected MVP: The Cooling Mat

Now here’s the thing about summer with dogs, especially during military life when you may be living somewhere hot and humid, the fun only lasts if your pup can cool down comfortably. After all the splashing and excitement, Zero immediately sprawled across it like he had just finished a luxury spa day. It became the true “VIP beach cabana” of the setup.

Cooling mats are especially great for:

• Apartment or balcony setups where grass/shade is limited
• Dogs with thick coats
• Older pets that overheat easily
• Post-zoomie recovery sessions
• Military families constantly outdoors during summer events, PCS prep, or base activities

Plus, they’re easy to move around, lightweight, and perfect for travel during PCS season.

You Don’t Need an Actual Beach

They don’t care if the “ocean” is a kiddie pool from the store. They don’t care if your balcony overlooks palm trees or a parking lot. They definitely don’t care whether the summer cookies were gourmet or grabbed during a quick run.

To them, it’s exciting. It’s time with you. It’s a new experience, and sometimes creating little moments like this matters more than planning something big. Especially during military life, where schedules change constantly and summer can feel packed with moving chaos, training schedules, travel, and heat waves.

Our Favorite Simple “Dog Beach Day” Essentials

A few things that made our little setup extra fun:

• A shallow doggie pool
• Cooling mat for post-play naps
• Summer-themed dog treats
• Frozen enrichment snacks
• Shade or umbrella coverage
• Towels you don’t mind sacrificing to chaos
• A camera roll ready for wet dog zoomies

You don’t need sand between your toes or an expensive vacation to make summer memorable for your pets.
